TFAB Design perspectives in tension fabric
As industry professionals, we regularly encounter
the challenges and rewards in staging main tent events. Over the last three decades, our industry has enjoyed technological advancements that have made our respective jobs easier. Video projection has processed from the finicky three-gun projector to DLP/LCD plug and play technology. Luninaries deliver more foot-candles for less power. Intelligent lighting has gone from proprietary in nature to off-the-shelf in availability. Audio continues in the direction of more sound per pound and "Powerpoint" has become the universal language for the presentation professional. This thirty year techno-explosion has facilitated the evolution of "business theater" as we know it today.
It seems illogical that one primary component in our
industry - scenic design - has not kept pace over the same time span. We continue to incorporate an outdated medium that serves up budgetary and logistical frustrations for the end user and service provider alike. Too many sleepless nights have been spent, under deadline, facing the challenges of of a stage set arriving damaged or incomplete. They have been too tall, too big or not big enough. Ever felt that impending sense of doom when first discovering that pesky little sophet or low hanging chandelier that was not contained in the ceiling reflections? Or. how about the horror of your keynote taking a header over that well marked stage jack? As industry professionals, we have endured rigors and compromises in trying to fit this archaic square peg into a round hole. Our applications in Tension Fabric (TFAB) Design addresses all of these problems ...and more.
Our research and development activities over the past
year convinces us that the TFAB design medium offers a cheaper, faster, safer archetype over any rigid stage set endeavor. We utilize a lightweight, flame treated synthetic membrane with rubberlike properties. A single large format seamless panel can be sculpted into a myriad of conventional or inventive configurations. It offers a high degree of flexibility, in that, the same backdrop - for example - can be configured for a forty, fifty or sixty foot wide stage of varying trim heights. The material is easily painted with light from the front or the rear and provides a canvas that challenges the imagination of even the most seasoned lighting designer.
TFAB serves impressively as front or rear projection surfaces, offering unlimited enhancements to design innovation. Electronic shaping of the projected image to TFAB scenic elements transforms a simple scenic design into interactive manifestations of the intended message ...a form of virtual reality speaker support - we plan on introducing this exciting development in early 2001.
TFAB scenic elements demand relatively no cargo space, fewer stagehands and man-hours to install and strike. Overall dimensions can be painlessly modified on a moments notice. Bottom line rental/design costs
for a sixty foot TFAB set as an example, will likely compare to the drayage costs alone for a comparable traditional set.
TFAB Design is on the cutting edge of a scenic design revolution.
We stand as a ready partner in complimenting your most discerning client.
We look forward to being of service.
